4th October 2 Day Birding Tour

Thursday 4th October 2012

Not too many migrants on the ground, lovely blue skies though!

We started the day at Holme in medium high tide saw a good collection of roosting shorebirds, 10,000 Knot, 500 Bar-tailed Godwit, 100+ Sanderling, plus Turnstone, ringed Plover, Dunlin, Grey Plover & Oystercatcher all on the shingle spits off the Golfcourse end of Holme.

The star bird amongst the masses was a smart adult Med Gull, although the Sandwich Terns looked smart as well in the great light. A scan of the sea, pulled out 3+ Red-throated Diver & a few Gannets & AuksA nice surprise was a Pale-bellied Brent which flew south only to pass back north an hour later.

Wandering along the dunes produced a Whitethroat & 2 Wheatear ( a sniff of migrants!). Up at the Obs they had ringed a few Willows & Chiffs, plus a Bearded Tit.

I took the group out for a seawatch & we had a nice surprise when a Manx Shearwater passed south, then eventually turned back out of the Wast heading west. Several skeins of Pink-feet were seen several miles out heading in off the sea. A few Common Scoter & Eider were also present.

8 Buzzard & 5 Marsh Harrier in the skies from the Obs

We spent the afternoon at Titchwell the highlights were   4 Whinchat, 2 Little Stint, 1 Curlew Sandpiper, 1 Whimbrel, 2 Spotted Redshank, Greenshank, 3 Spoonbill, 60+ Ruff & 2 very obliging Bearded Tit rounded the day off nicely!

94 Species
